Packing Cubes: Sizes, Materials and Compression Guide

What wholesale buyers should check before ordering packing cubes and travel organizers: fabric grades, size systems, set configurations and how compression zips actually work.

Industry reference information — general market knowledge, not a Camytonc product commitment.

Denier vs GSM — read both

Denier (D) is the linear density of a single fiber: the gram weight of 9,000 meters of that fiber (per ISO 2060). GSM (g/m²) is the weight of the finished fabric, which also depends on weave density, coating and finishing — there is no universal conversion between the two. Practical implication: a spec sheet that only states GSM lets a supplier swap yarns without breaking the purchase order — the same 210 gsm can be light 70D ripstop nylon or stiff 200D polyester oxford. Ask suppliers to state D, GSM, weave and finish together.

Common fabric grades

Sizes and sets

Three common grades (inch references): S ≈ 10″×7″ for small items, M ≈ 14″×10″ as the workhorse (4–6 rolled tees or 2–3 folded shirts), L ≈ 18″×13″ for pants and hoodies — the biggest compression gain. Four-tier systems add XL ≈ 22″×14″. Compression thickness drops from roughly 4″ to 1″; volume runs from about 1–2 L compressed (S) to 8–12 L expanded (L). Sets of 3/4/6/7/8 pieces are typical, usually mixing cube sizes with a shoe bag, laundry bag and flat pouches. Trip-based picks: 2–3 days = 2 M + 1 S; one week = add an L; two weeks = full 4-piece plus a laundry bag.

How compression works

Compression cubes add a second, outer zip: close the main zipper first, then pull the compression zip to squeeze air out of the folded layers. It is not vacuum — the clothes' own volume does not change. Check for two independent full-perimeter zip tracks, bar-tacked stress points and box-X stitching at corners and zip ends, 20–25 mm webbing handles, and coating thickness around 0.02–0.05 mm (PU for flexibility, TPU for a waterproof bonded feel, DWR for short-term splash protection).
